90, passed away July 2, 2017.  Born April 15, 1927 in Custer, SD, Vance was a proud WWII veteran who joined the Marines April 14, 1945 and served on the USS New Jersey. He started cooking while stationed at Naval Avionics in the late 1940’s, and spent his career as a chef and kitchen manager. After his retirement from Eli Lilly Cafeteria at the age of 72, Vance volunteered in the St. Vincent Carmel ER for over a decade. He was a 40 year member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church where he served as an Elder.  He enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, traveling, Civil War history, Patsy Cline’s music, and dancing with his wife. Vance loved to tease and joke with his grandchildren, especially about politics, and made the best pie you could find. He delighted in being a little bit ornery, but he had a huge heart.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen Marie (Newsom) Sauer, his parents Frank and Pearl (Hall) Sauer, his 2 sisters and 4 brothers, and daughter “Tootie” Kennedy Meserve. Left behind were his daughter Claralee Stevenson, sons Stephen (Vicki) Brown, Paul (Penny) Brown, and son-in-law Bill Meserve; grandchildren Chris Stevenson, Patrick Kennedy, Steve Brown, Meg Brown, and Peter Brown; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at Indiana Funeral Care; Harry W. Moore Chapel, 82nd and Allisonville Rd. The family will greet friends at 10 a.m. on July 12, 2017, followed by services at 11:00 am.  Interment will be at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Kindred Hospice. Arrangements entrusted to Indiana Funeral Care.

My deepest condolences to the Sauer family. Even though I didn’t have the pleasure of knowing Mr. Vance Sauer, I understand that losing a loved one is heartbreaking. Wishing to send a comforting hope for the future based on the words of our Lord Jesus Christ found in John 5:28, 29 – ” Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life.” May the hope of once again seeing our loved ones give you the strength that you need during these difficult situation.
